Natural Gout Remedies

One in forty people are affected by Gout globally. Traditionally being associated with too much port and an unhealthy lifestyle, what can help this seemingly common but complex form of arthritis, characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain?

What is Gout caused by?

Basically, it’s a high uric acid build up in the blood, which then accumulates in the joints, causing inflammation with discomfort and pain.

I have worked with many clients with this type of condition over the years, and there are an array of possible natural foods and remedies that can help, but ultimately adopting a vegetable heavy and chlorophyll rich alkalising diet on a daily basis works wonders!

However, if your gout pain is very sudden or intense, contact your doctor before trying any of the remedies below:

  1. Cherries can be a fantastic help whether sour, sweet, red or black, as a juice, or raw.

  2. Magnesium has been reported as good for gout because deficiency of magnesium may worsen chronic inflammatory stress in the body. Adequate magnesium is associated with lower and healthier levels of uric acid, thus potentially lowering gout risk.

  3. Ginger is a culinary food and herb prescribed for inflammatory conditions. Drink in a tea, include in your daily smoothie or juice and grate on your food.

  4. Apple Cider Vinegar, Lemon Juice, and Turmeric are each frequently recommended anecdotally for gout. This combination seems to work fantastically and helps to reduce inflammation and pain.

  5. Celery is a food traditionally used to treat urinary issues. For gout, extract and seeds of the vegetable have become popular home remedies. If purchasing an extract or supplement, follow label directions closely.

  6. Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) is an herbal remedy for gout that may reduce inflammation and pain.

  7. Milk Thistle is an herb used for liver health and may help lower uric acid.

  8. Apples contain malic acid, which lowers uric acid. Your daily apple could be just what the doctor ordered.

  9. Bananas are thought to be good for gout. They’re potassium-rich, which helps the tissue and organs in the body to function properly. However, don’t overdo your intake - Bananas also contain sugars, including fructose, which can be a gout trigger. Many foods are higher in potassium and lower in sugar than bananas, such as dark leafy greens and avocados.

  10. Epsom Salt baths are said to help prevent gout attacks. They are rich in magnesium, which may lower gout risk.

The other ways to ensure you cleanse the body if you are having an attack is to do a juice cleanse or use superfoods such as chlorella powder to help improve the good bacteria and overall immune system.

The foods to avoid are things such as red and organ meats, and shellfish such as shrimp and lobster. Any refined carbohydrates such as white breads, white rice, pasta and sugar should be avoided due to increasing your blood sugar levels. Avoiding processed foods, chips and sugary beverages such as alcohol and fizzy drinks should also make a significant difference.
